Farm and Garden Shop

Quality food, tools, hardy plants and useful gifts.

Food

We stock locally produced food and some from further afield: we try to minimise the food miles but have to admit to being tempted by delicious food, not already widely available up here, which we feel will appeal to our customers. A selection of what you’ll find in the shop includes:

  • Our own award winning Longhorn beef, naturally bred and raised at Logie, is specially prepared for the Farm shop. The beef from this traditional breed is hung for at least 3 weeks and the result is tender and succulent, and full of flavour – the taste of old-fashioned beef.  The beef has been winning prizes:  both the Rump Steak and the Topside has been awarded a Gold Star in the Great Taste Awards.
  • Our own wild venison. Roe, and sometimes red deer, from Logie Estate is available in useful sized pieces for roasting, slicing into steaks etc. The sausages and veniburgers are hard to beat.
  • Jams, biscuits, cakes, patés, cheeses etc – new products being sourced all the time.
  • One product which has been flying off the shelves is the Award winning Culisse Highland Rapeseed Oil. Recommended by Nigel Slater and Claire MacDonald, it is grown, pressed and bottled by Robert MacKenzie on his family farm in Easter Ross
  • We have a good range of smoked and fresh fish – salmon and white fish – delivered regularly.

Plants

We sell hardy plants specially selected for Scottish gardens. Many of our plants are grown and propagated from the Logie House Garden (100m above sea level), where mature specimens can be seen.

We aim to have long-lasting plants which are well proven and will continue to give pleasure for many years. We are always looking for unusual varieties of hardy perennials, shrubs and ground cover plants to add to our – and your – collections. The shop assistants are experienced gardeners and very happy to share their knowledge of the plants and gardening in general.

Tools, Paraphernalia & Useful Gifts

We sell tools and garden paraphernalia that we believe in. The range of tools is small but sturdy and useful – a lot of which we all use in the garden. Everyone has their favourite – some from the Burgon and Ball range, some made by Darlac, and then there the the wonderful Japanese tools from Niwaki – all the way from Japan where the tradition of hand tools is still so strong.

We also stock a range of useful gifts. From baskets, fun tea towels, to mugs, smellies (including Scottish Fine Soaps), toys and baskets, we look for well-made, purposeful products which make excellent presents – whether for yourself or someone else!

The Gift Card is unique to each area of Scotland, and can only be spent in businesses that have a ‘bricks and mortar’ presence in the local area – meaning that spending stays local for longer. It’s a great way to support local businesses and livelihoods. Visit www.scotlandgiftslocal.com for all the details.

At Logie Farm and Garden Shop, we like to sell products that we believe in and actually like to use or eat ourselves. You may well see us wearing the gloves or using the tools in the garden. And were you to come into our kitchens on any given night of the week, you would most likely find us cooking up something with origins at the shop too. Just some of the products you’ll find at the Farm & Garden Shop are listed below, with some information about why we have chosen them.

Longhorn Speciality Beef

Raised extensively here on Logie Estate. The award-winning Logie Herd produces beef among the absolute best around for taste and quality. Like all Logie Estate meat, beef is produced on a small scale and prepared in Forres; when the most popular cuts are gone, they’re gone! If you’d like to order beef please contact the Farm and Garden Shop.  We are now able to send orders of fish and meat to most UK addresses by overnight delivery; please ring the shop if you would like to make an order.

Logie Estate Roe Venison

Delicious wild venison from Logie Estate is available in season and when sustainability allows. Sold as haunch, loin, sausages, escallopes (particularly good for making kebabs) and our ever-popular veni-burgers.

Logie Estate Traditional Breed Pork

Rare/minority breeds raised on a very small scale here on Logie Estate.

Logie Estate Jacob Lamb

Like the pork, the Jacob lamb is raised on a very small scale each summer so when it’s gone, it’s really gone.

Marcassie Farm Kitchen

marcassie farm kitchen

Marcassie Farm Kitchen is a catering and events company founded by Gulli Skatun and Axel Zwaans, a couple who met whilst working in the Mediterranean.

‘After moving from London and Mallorca back to Gulli’s family home, Marcassie Farm, just outside Forres, we started MFK with the intention of bringing some more variety to the local food scene.  Being surrounded by small farms and local growers with amazing produce was so incredible after city life, but we have recognised the many challenges of cooking from scratch all the time, particularly with the busyness of life rushing back in post lockdown.

MFK has now evolved to focus on freezer meals – less waste and more flexibility for our customers.  We know that there really is nothing better than cooking from scratch, but the NEXT best thing is most definitely opening the freezer to find lovingly home-made, easy to prepare and most of all delicious, food that doesn’t compromise on health and happiness.’

Coffee

The special Logie blend of coffee has been developed for us by Kevin of the Inverness Coffee Roasting Company. Roasted locally this is a specially smooth blend which is very popular with our regular customers. We also stock other varieties including the new Sweet Brazil blend used, to great acclaim, in The Olive Tree Café – very appropriate as owner, Weller, hails from Brazil!

Some of the other local products in the shop

The award-winning Cullisse Highland Rapeseed Oil comes recommended by Nigel Slater and Claire MacDonald and we think it’s delicious too. It is grown, pressed and bottled by Robert MacKenzie on his family farm in Easter Ross.

Smoked salmon and other smoked fish is supplied by Sutherlands of Portsoy – using the same smoking methods passed down through the family for over 100 years …. No artificial chemicals or preservatives are used – that would be breaking with tradition.
It is utterly delicious – a mild but tasty smoke allowing the succulent character of the fish to be appreciated.

Jams and pickles are made in Nairn, and locally by Rachel Philp

Free range eggs from near Dyke and from the hens here at Logie

We stock a good range of really tasty local cheese from Tain and from Connage.

The highly baked Highland Crackers are made near Beauly.

Throughout the summer we have small batches of local honey …. but it is never on the shelf for long!

Terms & Conditions for fishing on Logie Estate

  1. Fishing on the river is restricted to 2 rods per beat and is to be by fly only. All fishing is from the right bank. By arrangement with the neighbouring estate there is no left bank fishing on the Relugas Middle and Top beats.
  2. The fishing is split into two 2 rod beats, Logie and Relugas, with Relugas sub divided into Middle and Top.  Beats can be taken together or separately. Logie is fished Monday to Saturday, Relugas Middle on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Relugas Top on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Beats change at midnight.
  3. Fishermen must contact Logie Estate office on 01309 611300 a day or so before arrival to organise being shown onto the river. A map of pools, beats and access routes will be provided.
  4. Bio-security is important to the future of the river and anglers are asked to observe protection measures. The Findhorn District Fishery Board Conservation Code will be strictly observed. To summarise: All fish caught up to 14th May inclusive must be released. From 15th May, all salmon over 9 lbs / 4 kg / 28 inches / 72 cm are to be returned.  Below that measurement at least 70% of salmon and 50% of grilse caught should be released and a maximum of 1 salmon and / or 2 grilse per rod per week may be retained. In September all fish are to be returned. No gaffs or tailers are allowed.
  5. The Findhorn District Fishery Board Bio-security measures will be strictly observed and all fishermen in the party must sign the Bio-security Declaration. (Also available at http://www.fnlft.org.uk/downloads/)
  6. The Estate recommends that barbless hooks are used, fishermen are in possession of a disgorger and that knotless nets are used. All possible care should be taken when returning fish to the river, they should be handled as little, and gently, as possible and should not be removed from the water.
  7. The catch should be reported at the end of each day of fishing to Logie Estate Office on 01309 611300. If the office is closed, please leave a message on the answering machine with the date, weight and pool. Please also report a nil catch day.
  8. Dogs are allowed on the river but must be kept strictly under control at all times. The Estate reserves the right to ask tenants to remove dogs if they are considered to be out of control.
  9. Rod, line and fly size are dependent on prevailing weather and water conditions and personal choice. In general, maximum rod length needed is 13ft with a size 8 or 9 line, usually floating. Fly sizes range from 6 – 8 in the spring down to 12 or less in summer low water.
  10. Safety must be considered at all times. All beats have a variety of pools with some suitable for most heights of water. Little wading is necessary and river paths are good however the fishing is within the Findhorn gorge, access to some of the pools is quite steep and a degree of rock scrambling is often necessary when playing and landing fish. Please be aware that a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required. A buoyancy aid for each rod is provided and should be collected from Logie Estate Office on arrival, and returned to the Estate Office (or to the outbuilding opposite if office is closed) on departure. Logie Estate strongly recommends that buoyancy aids are worn when fishing and not doing so is entirely at fishermen’s own risk. Please pay attention at all times, avoid slips and falls, wear appropriate footwear, look out for overhead electricity lines, watch the weather and pay attention to livestock. Take extra care if fishing alone.
  11. Anglers need to supply or hire their own equipment (except buoyancy aids, which are provided).
  12. Ghillieing/tuition is available by on a first come, first served basis. This must be booked in advance with the Estate Office and is subject to availability. A half day ghillieing/tuition is approx. 3 hours, full day approx. 6 hours. Please contact the estate office or check our website for current rates. Rates do not include discretionary tips.
  13. Rod, Reel & Line hire is available by on a first come, first served basis. This must be booked in advance with the Estate Office and is subject to availability. Please contact the estate office or check our website for current rates. A rod, reel and line set is for one person and is subject to a fully refundable damage deposit of £100.
  14. Aside from fishermen, others, including rafters and kayakers, enjoy this stretch of river and mutual respect and consideration is expected.
  15. Bookings are confirmed when initial payment is received. Subsequent changes in dates or number or rods are entirely subject to the Estate’s discretion and to availability. Change of dates, if accepted, incur an administration fee. In the event of a cancellation the tenant must advise Logie Estate immediately, whereupon Logie will endeavour to re-let. If a new tenant can be found the deposit will be returned less any expenses incurred for advertising, office costs, etc., and less any shortfalls in discounted list price. Until such time as a vacancy has been re-let the hirer is responsible for making any further payment by the due dates. Failure to do so may mean that the hirer forfeits any refund if the dates are re-let. If it is not possible to re-let, all payments are still payable by the due date(s). It is unlikely that a refund can be made for a late cancellation. Logie Estate recommends that fishermen take out relevant cancellation insurance.
  16. Subletting fishing is only allowed with Logie Estate’s permission.
  17. Logie Estate reserves the right to immediately withdraw fishing without compensation from anyone who breaks these or associated conditions, or flouts normal standards of behaviour or fishing etiquette.
