THE TEMPEST

By William Shakespeare

25th July 2019

The magician Prospero is marooned on an island with his daughter Miranda. With the assistance of a powerful air spirit he keeps in servitude, he conjures up a storm to shipwreck his enemies on the shore of the island. Inexorably they are driven towards the centre of the island to answer to Prospero – until Prospero learns that in spite of everything Miranda has met and fallen in love with Ferdinand, the son of his enemy. Which is greater – his thirst for revenge or his aptitude for forgiveness?

In their 28th open-air touring season, and renowned all over the world for their clarity, quality and ingenuity, Illyria return to their home-turf: Shakespearean comedy. The play, believed to be the last that Shakespeare wrote single-handedly, is lyrical, thought-provoking and raucously funny. More than 400 years after it was written it still has the capacity to surprise!

Illyria is an intrepid band of five actors who perform Shakespeare’s plays, entirely uncut, direct from the First Folio, the most authoritative edition of Shakespeare’s plays. It’s swift, it’s polished and it’s spoken beautifully (uniquely among open-air touring theatre companies Illyria’s artistic director has published articles on verse-speaking) – and scholars on both sides of the Atlantic agree that Illyria’s performance style is the most authentically Elizabethan to be seen. Since 1992 they have performed on what feels like every patch of grass from Land’s End to John O-Groats – and also in Ireland, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, USA and Canada. They are the only UK open-air touring company to have won no less than 4 international awards, and have a well-deserved reputation for being, quite simply, the best.

ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES!

Adapted by Oliver Gray

8th August 2019

Young Ali Baba stumbles across an enchanted cave when he overhears the magic words that open it: “Open Sesame!”. Inside the cave he finds untold amounts of gold and jewels, and takes some of it home to show his wife. But what will he do when she chides him for stealing? Can he keep the secret from his jealous brother? And when the Robber King comes looking for the missing treasure supported by an army of 40 angry thieves – will he and his family survive?

The show is notable for a scene where one character polishes off most of the thieves – 37 to be precise, and you can count each one – with a cast of just five of the most hardworking actors in the business!

Illyria was the first company to tour children’s theatre on this scale in the open-air touring sector. Following their enormous successes with THE ADVENTURES OF DOCTOR DOLITTLE, THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES, DANNY THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE, GEORGE’S MARVELLOUS MEDICINE, BABE THE SHEEP-PIG and THE TWITS they are also regarded as the best.

Now in their 28th season, they return with one of their most popular ever shows, last performed in 2003. ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES! is adapted from the One Thousand and One Nights (otherwise known as the Arabian Nights). Like all the stories in this towering literary classic it is packed with cliff-hangers, larger-than-life characters, and laughs galore. There’s lots and lots to join in with – and the most magical cave you’ve ever seen! Perfect summer fun for thieves and vagabonds aged 5+.

Show starts 5.30pm, you’re welcome to come and set up from 4.30pm.

Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes (including a 20 minute interval)

Tickets are available from Logie Steading Art Gallery, 01309 611378 or online here.

FRANKENSTEIN

By Mary Shelley

15th August 2019

Brilliant young student Viktor Frankenstein discovers how to endow dead organic matter with life itself. It is one thing to stitch together an anatomically complete organism, but quite another when it becomes a living, breathing creature that shows intelligence, feels torment – and demands answers of its creator. Viktor, disgusted by his creation and unable to face the consequences of bringing it into the world, escapes his claustrophobic university life to return home to Switzerland. But the Monster is not to be put off, and it relentlessly tracks him down. Jealous that Viktor is about to marry his childhood sweetheart and create life in a more conventional way, the Monster resolves to ransom him until a wife is created for him also….

Mary Shelley’s seminal novel was published in 1818 when she was just 21 years old, and has never been out of print. It was conceived when she and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley spent the summer of 1816 at Byron’s house on Lake Geneva. Byron proposed that they each write a ghost story to entertain the others. Mary was the last one to come up with her idea – but her story was by far the best and the most enduring.

This gripping tale is now a brand-new musical production created by Illyria, the first and only professional theatre company to have toured outdoor productions of Gilbert & Sullivan classics such as The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, Iolanthe, Ruddigore and The Mikado. FRANKENSTEIN is written by the same team who brought you The Adventures of Doctor Dolittle. It features a fully orchestrated musical score, a cast of professional actor singers, spectacular stage effects, puppetry – and flashes of the wickedly dark humour for which Illyria is justly celebrated. The show contains mature themes but is suitable for all ages 5+.

Show starts 7pm, you’re welcome to come and set up from 6pm.
