Sarah Speakman is passionate about promoting horticulture as a creative, productive and health-giving activity. As a mid-life career changer to horticulture herself she realised that she needed to escape the containment of office life and studied with the Royal Horticultural Society, attended practical courses at Reaseheath College and learnt the principles of garden design. Working in a garden centre increased her plant knowledge and from there she went on to manage a range of private Highland gardens, walled estate gardens and community projects, before moving to Inverness Botanic Gardens where she was head gardener for ten years. With influences from her favourite garden designers and her own love of pattern, colour and harmony, she redesigned and replanted the outside gardens of the Botanics whilst also developing the plant collections under glass; a diverse collection from all over the world, from tropical jungle to the deserts. Sarah has run many workshops and classes with the aim of giving people the confidence to have a go themselves and to develop their horticultural skills, maybe even to consider it as a career with its many rewarding avenues and specialities.
