Laura is a classically trained, award winning bookbinder specialising in traditional and contemporary hand-sewn books. A first class BA degree in Bookbinding from Roehampton Institute in London provided the sound traditional training and historical knowledge on which much of her work is based. Laura is also a Queen Elizabeth Scholar (2000) and Balvenie Artisan of the Year (2005). Laura and her husband, Chris, have run the Isle of Skye Bindery since 1999 and take on a wide range of bookbinding jobs, from limited editions to one-off commissions. Having taught many workshops locally and at university level, Laura’s supportive approach to teaching involves using comprehensive printed notes alongside step-by-step demonstrations.
Writers, artists and crafts people of all kinds will find a wealth of possibilities in learning to create their own books. No experience is necessary and students can expect to gain genuine skills in binding. if you have a particular project in mind please mention this when booking so Laura is aware of what materials you might need
Suitable for total beginners or those wanting to bind a book from start to finish; with Laura’s supportive and individual approach using comprehensive printed notes and step-by-step demonstrations this course is designed to give you bookbinding skills to enable you to tackle different projects in the future.
Alternatively, there will be opportunity to bring a treasured book (bookcloth, linen and paper bindings, but not leather unless you have done Laura’s Leather Masterclass*) back to life and preserve it for years to come. This course is for students who have already acquired basic bookbinding skills.
*we will run a Leather Masterclass alongside the book restoration if there is demand so, please enquire if you are interested
