Laura West's Regular Bookbinding Class returns to Logie Steading

Laura is a classically trained, award winning bookbinder specialising in traditional and contemporary hand-sewn books. A first class BA degree in Bookbinding from Roehampton Institute in London provided the sound traditional training and historical knowledge on which much of her work is based. Laura is also a Queen Elizabeth Scholar (2000) and Balvenie Artisan of the Year (2005). Laura and her husband, Chris, have run the Isle of Skye Bindery since 1999 and take on a wide range of bookbinding jobs, from limited editions to one-off commissions. Having taught many workshops locally and at university level, Laura's supportive approach to teaching involves using comprehensive printed notes alongside step-by-step demonstrations these options are designed to give you bookbinding skills to enable you to tackle different projects in the future.

Please choose which group you wish to join.

  • Learn the Basics (Beginners and Improvers):        Make a range of hardcover books, a Journal, a Sketchbook and a Thesis binding. Especially useful in binding A4 sheets the Thesis binding will provide a safe home for family histories, essays, recipes, academic papers.
  • Leather Masterclass:       Space for one to three students who wish to get to grips with leatherwork in bookbinding/box making. (Please request a pre-workshop tools list so you know what to bring).
  • Keep on Learning:      And, as usual, anyone can pursue their own binding or book repair project (for working with leather you must have completed Laura's Masterclass).  Importantly, please contact Laura in advance if you require certain colours/materials/tools for use in your project.
