About Lochindorb

Lochindorb Lodge

The emphasis at Lochindorb is on more extensive management.

The land is higher, less fertile and unforgiving in winter - opportunities for production are limited. Hardy blackface sheep produce lambs which are moved to the lower ground in winter. Here they are "finished" before sale and their age and feeding give them real flavour when compared to many a standard lamb.

Red Grouse, acknowledged the world over as the finest game bird quarry, have evolved over the years to live on a diet of insects and heather.

They are totally wild and only "managed" to the extent that we try and create the best conditions possible for them to live and breed.

Sheep and grouse co-exist happily, providing a double harvest from the land, employment for shepherd and gamekeeper and income for the owner, farmer and other businesses in the area.

Perhaps most importantly in terms of the wider environment, this management also creates ideal conditions for many other birds, animals and plants and Scotland's open heather moorland is recognised worldwide for its environmental quality.

LochindorbThe Loch itself, and its tributary burns, are a major nursery area for the Findhorn River as well as being renowned for the quantity, if not necessarily size, of its wild brown trout.

The low intensity management of the surrounding area protects the water quality and the Loch is used as a baseline for water pollution measurement by the environmental agency.
